Recognition – I has it again!

I figured it had been a year since winning Makeup Artist of the Week on the networking website known oh-so-appropriately as Model Mayhem, so I decided to try again with some newer images. Pretty gratifying, even if those contests never get the voter turnout the work deserves! (I had 9 votes total – next in line received 5.) Anyway, here’s the award graphic:

The two photos on the left were by Angela Perez (from this shoot); the one on the right is by David Pankratz. I love working with skilled beauty photographers!

Have you liked me on Facebook yet?

If not, now’s the time – I am giving away extra unused products that are taking up space in my already oversized stash! Tomorrow, May 26th at noon I will randomly draw ten names from my Facebook followers, who will get to choose from these products:

More info is available here – see you on Facebook!

Stick a pin in it

Another day, another social networking site – but my latest (Thumbtack.com) is admittedly cooler than I expected when I first received an email inviting me to join. Hey, can’t hurt right? And I’d definitely seen thumbtack in google search results before so I knew I should get with the program.

So I signed up, and I really loved how easy it was to set up and how many options I had to customize and enhance my profile. Check out my profile – Professional airbrush makeup on location - and then, if you’re a business owner looking for local customers, sign yourself up too!

New bridal website!

I am pleased to announce that I have created a dedicated page for my personal services work, which includes makeup for weddings, events, consultations, and more – check it out here! The page includes detailed bridal-themed galleries (including before & after snapshots), lots of information about my services, products, vendors, etc., and a contact form so you can submit a request for services.

I welcome feedback, so take a look and let me know what you think!

Ch-ch-changes

Notice anything different around here – a new bio, and fewer pages perhaps? Well, you’d be right – I’m simplifying the content of this site considerably in preparation for the launch of my new bridal/personal services website! It makes so much more sense to have a page dedicated to my fabulous brides, while I keep the commercial and editorial work as the focus here. I’m so excited to unveil (get it? veil?) the new page!

(After much thought, though, I decided to keep just ONE blog – I don’t think I can keep up with two separate ones, so the bridal website will link back here.)

I definitely need to catch up on my entries… last week I did moulage (injury simulation) makeup for the first time, worked with a former American Idol hopeful, and got signed to the assistant roster at a Boston talent agency. Whew! Just when I think there might be a lull, everything happens at once. Suffice to say I’m enjoying the ride!

I have got no service in the club, you see, see

Yep, this makeup artist isn’t afraid to go naked-faced for 48 hours (before coming home to a VERY thorough shower!) I’m headed into the Vermont wilderness for two nights, and I’ll be amazed if my cell phone gets a signal at all (forget about wi-fi). So if I’m uncharacteristically slow to get back to you… that would be why. (You can rest assured that I will leap frantically upon my laptop the moment we screech back into our driveway, so you won’t have to wait much later than Sunday p.m. for a reply.)

No makeup (or running water) where I’m headed, just sunscreen and bug spray. Should be an interesting change of pace!

Recognition. I has it.

This was a nice surprise:

I’m not truly a forum regular on “mm” (Model Mayhem), but I did enter the Makeup Artist of the Week contest a few times, and today I won. Given the fact that other pro makeup artists vote in that contest, I feel particularly flattered! I’ll be sure to be a regular voter from now on – it’s nice to see the entries and give a thumbs-up to those who are turning out great work.

Thanks guys & gals!

It pays to be a workaholic!

I was pleased as could be when a local journalist (who I used to work with) asked to interview me for a Hampshire Gazette feature on local business. It’s mostly about my (really awesome) day job, but I snuck in a few words about makeup too.

I’m very happy with how it came out. But you’d think I’d have a professional headshot of myself by now, wouldn’t you? I submitted one I took myself over a year ago, and it’s pretty obvious that it wasn’t cleaned up in Photoshop at all (cringe). I’m so much more comfortable working behind the scenes than being in front of the camera!

This is how much of a geek I am…

…I am actually considering driving all the way to Manhattan for a 2-hour lecture event with The Powder Group.

I really can’t justify the trip, especially considering that I’ll be driving to north-of-Albany the NEXT DAY for a long-anticipated photoshoot with two models I’ve worked with before (and a photographer I haven’t). But it’s so tempting… I loved the last seminar I attended. That one was three full days, but still… they pack a lotta learnin’ into a remarkably short period of time.

I suppose I should hold off on such professional development seminars until the Makeup Show in May, when I’ll have more than one reason to be in the city. But… SO TEMPTING.

(You thought I was kidding when I said I was a geek, didn’t you?)

And… I have a website! (obviously)

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of opening one’s email and seeing a note from a talented web designer informing you that your site design is complete. I absolutely love it – the design is clean (just like the best makeup), easy to navigate, and, most of all, I love that I can administrate changes easily on my own, thanks to my rudimentary WordPress skills. Dan (the aforementioned talented web designer), I cannot thank you enough! What a great start to the new year.

So, hi! I’m Liz, your friendly neighborhood makeup artist and all-around beauty junkie. I’ll come right out and say it: I’m not your typical fashionista. I’m chubby, geeky, and about as laid-back as a Leo can be. One of the reasons I love doing makeup is because I know how to make it accessible to everyone from professional models to working moms to fledgling drag queens. As far as I’m concerned, everyone’s invited to the party.

Stay tuned as I fumble along in my new blog… I’ll keep you posted about my beauty exploits, my product raves (and rants), and dispense some beauty tips along the way. And I’ll try to make it fun – yes, fun! I think makeup is fun, and if you do too, you’ll probably like it here. If you view makeup as the tedious chore you resentfully undergo every morning to make yourself feel marginally less disgusting, you probably shouldn’t read on (or maybe you really, really should, because sugar, that ain’t how it ought to be!) Makeup is just another way to express one’s personal style.

…and, hey, it’s cheaper than designer shoes.
