Sneak peek: Underwater shoot with Lauren Farrington

This was a new experience for me! I’ve done plenty of makeup that had to stay put through tears, sweat, etc., but never makeup that had to withstand being underwater for hours (well, non-sequential hours, anyway). I’m pleased to say the dramatic look that I came up with was even more water-resistant than I had hoped – it wasn’t going ANYWHERE until the model took it off!

The submerged photos still need to be processed, so I have only above-water photos to show right now:

In the second photo, she had already been underwater multiple times over an hour – see how nicely the eyes stayed put? Nothing ran down her face!

The obvious choice for underwater work is makeup that is oil, gel or silicone based – nothing water based, and any powder used has to have something to stick to. I used CoverFX cream foundation with just loose powder to set; BeneTint cheek and lip stain (in the first photo); MAC longwear liquid lipstick on lips (second photo); and MAC Fluidline eyeliner on the lids with Yaby Pearl Paint eyeshadows on top. And, of course, waterproof mascara (Cover Girl Lash Blast). I can definitely recommend using water-resistant gel eyeliner as eyeshadow – it looked amazing no matter how many times the model ducked below the surface. Just don’t rub at your eyes when wearing it!

Yesterday was perfect for a shoot in a pool – really hot and sunny. I was quite jealous of both the model and photographer for being able to take a dip. I settled for standing at the edge of the above-ground pool and swirling my arms below the surface. Very relaxing, considering I didn’t have to do touch-ups until the outfit change! I can’t wait to see how the underwater images come out.

Belated congrats to Hallmark’s Class of 2010

I’ve written about my fondness for the Hallmark Institute of Photography before… living in Western Mass, it’s a real blessing to have such an amazing facility and talented students nearby. Lots of creativity in that building, and some of my favorite portfolio photos were partly taken to fulfill students’ class assignments (high key beauty was a particularly popular request!)

I attended the Class of 2010′s graduation in June, and I am proud to say I worked with FOUR of the recipients of 2010′s Portfolio Awards of Excellence – belated congrats to Kris Atendido, Colin Pattison, Lauren Mazzotta, and Alex Minkin. I love seeing my makeup work in the school’s top portfolios, what can I say?

I am really looking forward to meeting the Hallmark Institute of Photography Class of 2011!

Sneak peek: Gold story with Greg Brown

A first look from photographer Greg Brown – I thought earthy golds would look beautiful against Stephanie’s intense blue eyes and freckled skin:

More to come!

Inclement summer

Another day, another rained-out photoshoot! I’ll let my dog illustrate my feelings on the matter:

OK, I’ll admit, we do need the rain… by “we,” I mean “anything that grows out of the soil (and those who grow things)” (which is to say, not me specifically, but hey, I eat vegetables, so, hooray for rain!) But still, I’m always a bit disappointed when the weather makes me shuffle my calendar around, especially when said calendar is getting packed and shuffling becomes much more difficult! OK, I guess I have nothing to complain about – I just wanted to post a silly picture of my dog :)

Here’s hoping next week’s weather is more cooperative!

Color Splash!

I just got some new images from photographer and Hallmark graduate Tyler Shumway, who is an aspiring (and very talented) beauty photographer. I love his flawless yet realistic touch with photo editing as well as his behind-the-lens prowess. Here are samples of two shoots we did together earlier this year:

(Always comb out your lashes, folks!)

And here’s a nice, natural eye makeup look to wear to your next job interview or PTA meeting:

…or not :)

Tyler, Western Massachusetts’ loss is New York’s gain – I look forward to working together again in the future!
